Corrections operates the Vermilion Parish Correctional Center, which houses pre-trial detainees and sentenced inmates. Our corrections officers maintain a safe, secure, and humane environment while providing inmates with opportunities for rehabilitation and personal growth.

The facility operates under strict standards and policies to ensure the safety of staff, inmates, and the public. Our trained corrections officers are committed to upholding the highest standards of care and security within the correctional system.

Captain Sammy LaPorte started his law enforcement career in Corrections at the Vermilion Parish Sheriff's Office in June 1994 under Sheriff Ray LeMaire. After a year and a half, he became a VPSO patrol deputy where he remained until he was promoted to Detective Sergeant in the Criminal Investigations Division (CID) in 2002.

Captain LaPorte progressed through the ranks of the Criminal Investigations Division over the next twenty-two years. In 2006, under Sheriff Mike Couvillon, he was promoted from Detective Sergeant to Lieutenant of the Intel Division where he assisted all members of the CID. In January of 2018, Captain LaPorte was named the Chief of Detectives until July 2023 when he was promoted to Chief of Investigations.

Captain LaPorte was instrumental in starting the Vermilion Parish Sheriff's Office Special Response Team (SRT) in 2005 as the inaugural SRT Commander. Captain LaPorte has been the master Defensive Tactics instructor at VPSO and has taught other less lethal uses of force for over 20 years. He has also served as a Crisis Negotiator.

Captain LaPorte graduated from Abbeville High School in 1985. He is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps where he served 6 1/2 years of active-duty service.

Facility Information

The Vermilion Parish Correctional Center is a modern correctional facility designed to meet the needs of Vermilion Parish. The facility houses both male and female inmates and includes separate areas for different classification levels to ensure safety and security.

Medical Services

On-site medical staff providing healthcare, mental health services, and emergency medical response

Commissary

Inmates may purchase approved items through the facility commissary on designated days

Inmate Communication

Telephone and written correspondence privileges are available to inmates per facility policy

Inmate Programs

We believe in providing inmates with the tools and resources they need for successful reentry into the community.

Educational Programs

Inmates have access to GED preparation courses, literacy programs, and vocational training designed to improve their skills and increase their chances of successful reentry into the community.

Substance Abuse Treatment

Comprehensive substance abuse counseling and treatment programs are available to inmates who struggle with addiction, helping them build a foundation for long-term recovery.

Religious Services

The facility accommodates various faith-based programs and services, including regular worship services, Bible studies, and pastoral counseling from approved chaplains and volunteers.

Work Programs

Eligible inmates may participate in supervised work programs that teach responsibility, work ethic, and practical skills. These programs contribute to facility maintenance and community service projects.
